Breakfast: the wonder meal

Breakfast: the wonder meal

Did you know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day?

Eggs Florentine – Our western friends love this one for breakfast (me too, but the only thing I’m a ‘westerner’ of, is that of Singapore)

Breakfast is the meal that fuels us for the day and is also our first meal after our overnight fast. Cars are unable to move without petrol; likewise without our “fuel”, we are unable to power on through our day.

Many of us are guilty for skipping breakfast due to the morning rush, allowing it to fall to the bottom of our list of priorities. However, we are not aware that just taking a few minutes to have a slice of wholemeal bread with peanut butter, could make a huge difference to our day.

Chwee Kueh – one of the local favourites

Breakfast provides us with not only energy, but also nutrients such as Calcium, Iron, Vitamin B and Protein. When we skip breakfast, our body compensates for the lack of these nutrients throughout the day. This leaves us prone to tiredness, which leads to a lack of motivation and productivity when completing tasks. Tiredness also causes us to be more short-tempered, which affects our social surroundings.

Hence, breakfast is not about grabbing anything we can find in the kitchen to fill up our stomach. Ingredients chosen for our meals should have the right amount of nutrients. A good breakfast should include variations of fruits, grains, meat and dairy, which give us enough energy and put us in a good mood for a productive day.

Dosai – some of our indian friends might even say they prefer this to Roti!

I personally feel that breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it helps to keep me energised. Without breakfast, I would often be in a bad mood and avoid the people around me. I love including fruits in my breakfasts to ensure that I get sufficient vitamins, nutrients and fibres. If I have more time in the morning, I even cook up a bowl of oats with sliced bananas, topping it off with some cacao nibs and a drizzle of maple syrup to taste.

So whether you are rushing to work, school or just waking up from a good night’s rest, always remember to grab a bite to conquer the day ahead!
